HUSH Interview (The Citrus Report)

The Citrus Report recently caught up with HUSH for an interview!

Your work seems to be a juxtaposition of everything from pop art and abstraction to anime and comics. Are you tying to break the bridge between “high” and “low” art?

Not so much the anime these days but it is still an influence. However, when I see graffiti, especially tagging, as a form of expressionism or a political action, and when lots of it is seen in one place on the street, it creates a visual image like nothing else I can compare it to. It’s beautiful.

Taking it from the street and applying it to the work you make in the gallery setting is difficult. That’s why I approach it as action painting; it could easily be determined as abstract expressionism also. You need to capture that instantaneous decision to make the mark. That’s why I have canvases continuously around the studio. I throw everything at them, tag them, throws, the lot. It feels like it carries a bit of that excitement. It also places this movement into a category that is continuing to build on past art movements, which every new movement does.

An Introduction to the Many Talents of Niels Shoe Meulman

941 Geary will be hosting a solo show by Amsterdam-based artist Niels Shoe Meulman this March and we thought we’d give you a brief introduction to the creative endeavors he’s been involved with throughout his life. By the age of 18, Niels was a rising graffiti legend, known by his street moniker of “Shoe.” Niels helped create an innovative style of European graff through his crew Crime Time Kings, which he formed with Bando from Paris and Mode2 from London.

Niels artistic focus expanded when he begun study under Anthon Beeke, a Dutch graphic designer considered an expert in the field, and went on to start a deisgn company named Caulfield & Tensing, an advertising agency named Unruly. Niels continued to stay busy working as Creative Director of all MTV brands, and then devolping Calligraffiti, a personal style of combining calligraphy with graffiti, in 2007. Neils unveiled his Calligraffiti exhibit in Amsterdam, where it enjoyed a successful opening, and the success continued into 2010 when Niels published the book Calligraffiti, and promoted it with a 22-city tour.

Niels’ exhibit at 941 Geary, entitled Justified Scriptures, will be exploring Calligraffiti along with abstract expressionism and based on his track record it is sure to be filled with incredible work! Keep your eye out for more news to come and in the meantime take a look at a few favorite works from his past, the variety is amazing!

Install Week with Hush Part II

Never one to settle for an average exhibition, Hush has been working non-stop on the installation for his show “New Works by Hush“, opening this Saturday at 941 Geary, 6-9pm. After an impressive showing late last year at Onethirty3 (Reviewed here), it has been so great to see the installation aspect of his work grow in both concept and size since his first showing with us at Shooting Gallery. His signature layers of graffiti-influenced patterns are complimented by some new black on black backgrounds that look amazing. You don’t have to just take our word for it though, take a look for yourself:

941Geary Presents:
New Works by Hush

941 Geary is pleased to present a new solo exhibition by UK-based artist, Hush, opening January 21, 2012 at 941 Geary. The new collection contains mixed-media works ranging from small to large sized pieces and heavy installation. The exhibition is sure to follow in the footsteps of the artist’s 2010 sold-out solo show at Shooting Gallery, Passing Through, on a grander scale seeing as the exhibit fills the much larger space of 941 Geary.
New Works by Hush continues the artist’s unique style, recognizable through its focus on geisha-like women set within backgrounds filled with an expressionist’s freedom of layering and color. The serene balance of traditional Eastern art is combined with a messier passion, influenced by Western traditions of action painting and graffiti, culminating in a harmony that feels surprisingly natural.

The artist’s mark-making bears the distinct aesthetic of tagging, bringing the rough texture of street art into each piece. Swift gestural marks underlie splashes of paint, looping through lines and over bright combinations of color. With an in-depth technique that includes painting, screen printing, spray-painting and collage, Hush creates work that instantly draws the eye in and holds the viewer’s focus. Patterns ranging from geometric repetition to florals that conjure up images of royal tapestries and delicately decorated vases are not solely confined to the background but often take shape, forming graceful kimonos, hairstyles or headpieces. In some works these shapes appear solidly, while in others the central figures are only lightly delineated from the waves of pattern, body and background blending, as if they are sinking into the colorful composition itself.

Hush is an artist living and working in the UK. He has been featured in several publications including Street Knowledge (Harper Collins) and The Street Art Stencil Book (Laurence King Publishing), Huck magazine, Art Monthly and London’s newspaper, The Independent (where he was recognized in their list of the “Top 20 Up and Coming Artists”). In 2010 Hush will release a series of snowboards with Burton and a series of commissions with Mitsibushi Securities Bank in London as well as exhibit with the Portsmouth Museum of Art (NH). He has exhibited internationally with Opus Art (London) and Strychnin Gallery (Berlin) and nationally with SCOPE Art Fair (New York, Miami and Switzerland), The Shooting Gallery (San Francisco) and Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles). In 2011, Hush launched the installation program and exhibition space, onethirty3, in Newcastle, UK.

Established in 2010 in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco, 941 Geary is an innovative exhibition space housed in a 3,000 square foot converted warehouse. 941 Geary highlights the works of internationally recognized contemporary artists and provides them with a space in which to activate the projects, installations, and exhibitions that push the boundaries of their own creative practice. Building on the success of White Walls and Shooting Gallery, curator Justin Giarla dedicates this exhibition space as a gift to San Francisco, offering its programming to the local and global arts venue as a way to engage in a cross-cultural dialogue and present 941Geary as the flagship gallery of the Urban Contemporary genre.
