This Saturday, 941 Geary will present a group show curated by gallery director Tova Lobatz, While We Were Away. The show responds to the concept expounded by the Tate Modern‘s 2009 exhibition Altermodernity, in which its curator Nicolas Bourriaud proclaimed “A new modernity is emerging, reconfigured to an age of globalization – understood in its economic, political and cultural aspects: an altermodern culture.” Travel, and the speed with which information is exchanged in an increasingly globalized society, has profoundly affected contemporary art.
Sten Lex and How Nosm are both artist duos who will be contributing work to the group show as well as memorabilia and personal artifacts from travel in recognition of its affect on their art. Sten and Lex are both from Italy, and are considered to be at the forefront of the stencil graffiti movement, while How and Nosm are twin brothers who have painted large scale murals across the world: their style distinctly recognizable by its red, black and white palette.
